Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows Dr. Schafer-McLean to examine the inside of your uterus using a small camera known as a hysteroscope. It can be used to diagnose and treat conditions such as uterine fibroids, polyps, or abnormal bleeding. Hysteroscopy is often used in concert with treatments that remove known fibroids or polyps, control menstrual or postmenopausal uterine bleeding, and it can help improve fertility outcomes in certain cases.
Endometrial Ablation
Endometrial ablation is a procedure used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding by removing or destroying the endometrial lining of the uterus. This procedure is preferentially recommended for women who have completed childbearing and desire to minimize menstrual or abnormal bleeding. Endometrial ablation can be performed using various techniques, including heat, cold, or laser, and it is often done as an outpatient procedure with less than 24 hours recovery time. At Balance Medical, we partner with Hologic for Novasure heat ablation and Channel Medsystems for Cerene cold ablation. We are proud to offer these game-changing procedures, comfortably, in the office with return to work and life the next day.
Endometrial Biopsy
An endometrial biopsy is a procedure used to obtain a small sample of the tissue from the lining of the uterus. This tissue sample is then examined for abnormalities, such as cancerous cells or changes in the endometrium. An endometrial biopsy is often used to investigate abnormal bleeding or evaluate for conditions such as endometrial hyperplasia and uterine polyps. Endometrial biopsy is performed in-office at Balance Medical with options for medicated pain control.
Colposcopy
A colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure performed to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of disease. It is typically recommended if you have abnormal Pap smear results. During the procedure, a special magnifying instrument called a colposcope is used to look for areas of concern, and biopsies may be taken for further analysis. Colposcopy is an in-office procedure with minimal discomfort, but may be performed as a medicated procedure in the clinic at Balance Medical to optimize pain control.
LEEP Procedures
The Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) is a treatment for abnormal cervical cells, often discovered during a Pap smear and subsequent colposcopy. LEEP uses a thin, electrically charged wire to remove abnormal tissue from the cervix. This procedure helps prevent the development of cervical cancer and is usually performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. At Balance Medical, we provided medicated LEEP procedures in the clinic to eliminate the need for a surgical setting, while still providing desirable pain control.

Cervical polypectomy is a procedure used to remove polyps (growths) from the cervix. While most cervical polyps are benign, they can cause abnormal bleeding or discomfort. During the procedure, the polyps are gently removed, and the area is examined for any signs of abnormal tissue. These procedures surprisingly produce very little pain.
Vaginal or Perineal Biopsies
Vaginal or perineal biopsies are performed to collect tissue samples from the vaginal or perineal area for further examination. These biopsies can help diagnose conditions such as abnormal growths or cancers. The procedure is quick and minimally invasive. Balance Medical partners with Northern Plains Laboratories to offer efficient and reliable analysis and identification of samples to allow for diagnosis of the underlying disease.
IUDs
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a highly effective form of long-term birth control. IUDs are small, T-shaped devices inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. They work by releasing hormones or using copper to prevent fertilization. IUDs can be effective for up to 5-10 years. IUD insertion is a quick outpatient procedure, typically done in the office, with minimal downtime afterward. Balance Medical also offers medicated IUD placement options for women who have never been pregnant (nulliparous) or women who are more sensitive to pelvic exams.
Nexplanon
Nexplanon is a small, flexible implant inserted under the skin of the upper arm to provide long-term contraception and/or menses control. This implant releases a steady, low dose of progestin to prevent pregnancy for up to three years. Nexplanon insertion is a simple outpatient procedure that can be done in the office, and it is highly effective in preventing pregnancy.
Incision and Drainage of Abscesses
In some cases, an abscess (pocket of infected fluid) may develop in the vagina or perineal area. If an abscess does not drain on its own, it may need to be surgically drained. This procedure involves making a small incision to allow the fluid to escape and the infection to heal. For small, accessible abscesses, this is typically done under local anesthesia in the office.
Pessary Fitting and Insertion
A pessary is a silicone device that is inserted into the vagina to support the pelvic organs. It is often used to treat pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, or vaginal wall support issues. The pessary is custom-fitted to each patient and can be a highly effective, non-surgical solution for managing these conditions. Pessary fitting and insertion is a quick, painless, in-office procedure that does not require anesthesia.
Skin Tag Removal
Skin tags are small, benign growths that can appear on the skin, often in areas where skin rubs together, such as the underarms, under breasts, neck or perineum. Skin tags can be removed in an outpatient setting through a simple, minimally invasive procedure. This removal is typically quick, with minimal discomfort due to local numbing. These procedures have a very short recovery period.
