An abscess can develop quickly and become painful or swollen over a short period of time. If you have a tender, red lump that isn’t improving, a simple in-office incision and drainage procedure may be the right next step.

What Is an Abscess?

An abscess is a pocket of pus that forms when the body is trying to fight off an infection. It’s your immune system’s way of walling off bacteria or irritants, but in the process, it creates a buildup of fluid that causes swelling, pain, and tenderness.

Abscesses often appear in:

  • Vaginal or vulvar tissue
  • The perineal area
  • Under the skin of the inner thighs, buttocks, or groin
  • Sites of ingrown hairs or clogged glands

Small abscesses may resolve with warm compresses and time, but others require a quick procedure to release the fluid and help the tissue heal.

What to Expect from the Procedure

If your abscess needs to be drained, we’ll gently numb the area with a local anesthetic to keep you as comfortable as possible. Then, using a small, sterile instrument, we’ll make a tiny opening in the skin to allow the trapped fluid to drain out.

Once the area is cleaned and the pressure is relieved, we may place a small dressing or packing to help the wound stay open and continue to drain for the next day or two. The entire procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes and is done right in our office.

We’ll send you home with clear aftercare instructions and everything you need to keep the area clean and healing well.

Recovery & Aftercare

Here’s what to expect:

    • You may need to keep the area clean and dry for a few days

    • Avoid soaking in bathtubs, pools, or hot tubs while healing

    • If packing was used, we’ll schedule a quick follow-up for removal or replacement

    • We may prescribe a short course of antibiotics depending on the severity of the infection

And of course, if something feels off, we’re just a phone call away.

Frequently Asked Questions  About Incision and Draining of Abscesses

Should I try to drain it at home?

No. Attempting to drain an abscess at home can lead to infection or scarring. It’s safest to have it treated in a sterile, clinical setting by a medical provider.

What causes abscesses in this area?

Abscesses can form due to blocked glands, ingrown hairs, small tears in the skin, or infections like bacterial vaginosis. Sometimes, they develop without a clear trigger.

Will it hurt?

We use a local anesthetic to numb the area, so most patients feel only pressure during the procedure. Some discomfort afterward is normal, but we’ll help you manage it.

Can I go back to work after the procedure?

Many patients return to work the next day, depending on the size and location of the abscess. We’ll give you personalized advice based on your situation.

What if the abscess comes back?

Some abscesses are one-time events, but others may recur. If you’ve had more than one, we’ll explore any underlying causes and talk about long-term prevention.
