Preoperative (Pre-Op) Instructions

Prior to your surgery, adhering to the following instructions will help ensure a smooth procedure:

Scheduling Your Pre-Op Appointment

After finalizing your surgical plan with Dr. Rhonda Schafer-McLean, arrange a pre-op appointment within 30 days of your surgery. This consultation will review your medical history and current medications, and may include necessary lab tests.

Consultations with Specialists

If you have significant medical conditions, you might need to consult with specialists (e.g., cardiology, hematology) as advised during your pre-op visit.

Medication Management

Discuss all medications you’re taking during your pre-op appointment. Specifically, blood-thinning medications may need to be paused 7-10 days before surgery. You’ll receive detailed instructions on which medications to take on the day of surgery.

Fasting Guidelines

We may inform you regarding certain fasting guidelines. This may include refraining from eating or drinking for at least 12 hours before your procedure, typically from midnight prior to the surgery day.

Arrival Time

Plan to arrive at the hospital approximately two hours before your scheduled surgery time. The hospital team will provide specific details via phone the day before your surgery.

Postoperative (Post-Op) Care Instructions

Proper post-op care is essential for a successful recovery. Depending on your specific procedure, aftercare instructions may vary. However, it is important to follow all instructions provided by your doctor, including taking prescribed medications as directed to manage pain and prevent infection.

Rest

Rest is important, so avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for the recommended time. You may be asked to avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting, exercise, and excessive bending or stretching, for the recommended period provided by your doctor. Overexertion can slow recovery and increase the risk of complications.

Hygiene

Proper hygiene is essential to prevent infection and support healing. Keep the surgical site clean and dry, and watch for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, increased pain, or discharge. You may experience some light bleeding or spotting, which is normal, but contact your doctor if the bleeding becomes heavy.

Hydration & Nutrition

Staying well-hydrated is essential for healing and preventing constipation, which can be common after surgery or anesthesia. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins, protein, and fiber will support tissue repair and overall recovery. If pain medications or anesthesia cause constipation, your doctor may recommend a stool softener or mild laxative.

Concerns

If you have any concerns or experience severe pain, fever, or unusual symptoms, reach out to your healthcare provider promptly. Always attend follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing and recovery, and do not hesitate to ask questions or clarify post-op instructions if needed.
