What to Expect During Insertion

Nexplanon is placed during a quick, in-office procedure. We start by numbing a small area on the inside of your upper arm. The implant is then inserted just beneath the skin using a specialized applicator.

The whole thing usually takes less than 5 minutes, and most patients describe the process as more “weird” than painful. You’ll go home with a small bandage and the peace of mind that your birth control is handled for years.

Recovery and Aftercare

After placement, it’s normal to feel a little soreness or tenderness at the insertion site. You might also have a small bruise or slight swelling for a few days. We’ll give you care instructions, but most patients return to their regular routine right away.

Here’s what to expect post-procedure:

• • A pressure bandage for 24 hours

• • Light activity restriction on the arm for a day or two

• • Occasional spotting or changes in your period (we’ll talk about this ahead of time)

If you ever decide you want the implant removed early, or want to try something different, it can be easily taken out during another quick office visit.
