What Is Endometrial Ablation?
Endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that removes the lining of the uterus (called the endometrium). This is the tissue that sheds during your period—so when it’s gone or thinned out, bleeding is significantly reduced.
This is not a hysterectomy, and it doesn’t involve any incisions. The procedure is done through the vagina, typically in the comfort of our office, and usually takes just a few minutes. Most women are back to their normal activities within a day or two.
Endometrial ablation is a non-hormonal, non-surgical solution for heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding (also known as menorrhagia) in women who are done having children.
Who Is It For?
If any of the following sound familiar, you’re in the right place:
- “I bleed through a pad or tampon every hour.”
- “I’ve stopped wearing certain colors during my period.”
- “I’m always tired, and my doctor says I might be anemic.”
- “I want relief, but I don’t want hormones or surgery.”
If you’re nodding along and thinking, “That’s me,” know that you’re not alone. These symptoms are incredibly common and absolutely treatable.
If your period is dictating your calendar, wardrobe, or weekend plans, it might be time for something better. You deserve to feel comfortable, not caught off guard every month. No more packing a backup outfit just in case!
NovaSure® and Cerene™: The Technologies We Use
At Balance Medical, we offer two FDA-approved endometrial ablation systems. Both options are fast, safe, and performed in our office without general anesthesia.
NovaSure® Endometrial Ablation
NovaSure uses a gentle radiofrequency energy to remove the uterine lining. The entire process takes about 5 minutes, and most patients report significant symptom relief in just one cycle.
Cerene™ Endometrial Ablation
Cerene is a next-generation option that uses cold therapy (cryothermal energy) instead of heat. It’s especially well-suited for women who have had children, and many patients report less cramping during recovery.
Whether you’re considering Cerene or NovaSure®, both treatments are:
- Performed right here in our office
- Non-surgical (no incisions or general anesthesia required)
- Quick—typically taking less than 10 minutes
- Designed to help you get back to your normal life within a day or two
We’ll help you choose the option that makes the most sense for you—based on your anatomy, medical history, and goals for treatment.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The ablation is performed in a private, calming environment right here in our clinic…no hospital stay required. You’ll lie back just like during a regular pelvic exam. A speculum is used to access the cervix, and then either the NovaSure® or Cerene™ device is carefully placed into the uterus. Depending on which method is used, radiofrequency energy (NovaSure) or cryotherapy (Cerene) is applied to remove the uterine lining responsible for heavy bleeding.
The treatment itself takes just a few minutes, and you’ll be monitored briefly afterward before heading home the same day. Most women describe the sensation as mild to moderate cramping, similar to period cramps. It’s common to experience a watery or slightly bloody discharge for a few days after the procedure.
Recovery and Results
Recovery is typically quick and manageable. Some light cramping and spotting are common for the first day or two, but most women are back to their usual routines within 24 hours.
Results usually begin to show within one to two menstrual cycles and for many women, the difference is life-changing. Periods become significantly lighter or stop altogether, and the relief from constant planning, pain, or fatigue can feel like getting your life back.
In fact, around 90% of women who undergo endometrial ablation experience long-term relief from heavy bleeding. Many are also able to stop taking iron supplements, pain medications, or hormone-based treatments they previously relied on to manage their symptoms.
Is Endometrial Ablation Right for You?
If you’re done having children and your periods are disrupting your life, whether it’s fatigue, leaking through protection, or just always having to plan around your cycle, endometrial ablation might be a good option to consider.
This treatment is often ideal for women who:
- Are finished with childbearing
- Want to avoid surgery or long-term medications
- Are seeking a non-hormonal solution for heavy or prolonged periods
That said, it’s not right for everyone. Endometrial ablation isn’t recommended for women who plan to become pregnant in the future, have uterine abnormalities or infections, or are at risk for uterine cancer.
Our team will take time to talk through your symptoms, review your medical history, and determine whether this option fits your goals and lifestyle.
We’ll walk you through your options, listen to your concerns, and help you choose what makes the most sense for you.
