What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable treatment designed to restore facial volume and improve skin texture over time for a more youthful appearance. Unlike hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, which use a gel filler to add volume beneath the skin, Sculptra works differently. It is formulated with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a collagen stimulator that absorbs into the body following treatment to encourage continued collagen production.

Sculptra is commonly used to treat:

  • Wrinkles around the eyes, chin, or mouth
  • Hollow areas in the cheeks or around the temples
  • Skin laxity in the mid-face
  • Restore overall skin structure and volume to various areas

Who is a Candidate for Sculptra?

Healthy individuals who may benefit from Sculptra injections include those who wish to reduce deep wrinkles, elevate areas that have lost volume, or redefine or soften contours. However, individuals with active skin infections at the treatment site, severe allergies to any of the ingredients within Sulptra, or who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not receive Sculptra. To learn more about candidacy, please contact Balance Medical today to schedule a consultation.

The Sculptra Treatment

Sculptra is a minimally invasive procedure that typically takes 30-60 minutes to complete. First, your injector will assess your facial structure and cleanse the treatment area. A topical anesthetic may be applied to help reduce any possible discomfort during the injections. However, this may not be necessary for some, as Scultpra contains small amounts of lidocaine to help ensure patient comfort. The Sculptra will then be injected into the treatment areas using a small syringe.

Sculptra Recovery and Results

There is no downtime required following Sculptra. Patients may experience mild and temporary injection site redness, swelling, or bruising in the treatment area. You may be advised to avoid strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours after treatment to avoid excessive swelling.

Sculptra gradually restores the skin’s foundation due to natural collagen production. Results can be seen as early as one month after treatment as the PLLA works to stimulate collagen, with results lasting up to two years. Multiple injections every few years may be required to maintain results.

How does Sculptra stimulate collagen production?

Sculptra stimulates collagen production through its active ingredient, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic substance. When injected into the skin, PLLA acts as a collagen stimulator rather than just providing immediate volume like traditional fillers. Once Sculptra is injected into the deeper layers of the skin, it triggers a response from the body's healing process, which produces collagen.
