What Is a Hysteroscopy?
A hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus. During the procedure, a thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix; no incisions required!
It lets your provider clearly view the uterus and, if needed, perform small treatments during the same procedure. This can include removing polyps or fibroids, taking a biopsy, or treating scar tissue.
There are two types:
- Diagnostic hysteroscopy: Used to investigate symptoms like abnormal bleeding or infertility.
- Operative hysteroscopy: Used to correct issues like polyps, fibroids, or adhesions, often during the same appointment.
Why You Might Need a Hysteroscopy
There are a number of reasons your provider may recommend a hysteroscopy. It’s commonly used for women experiencing:
- Heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding
- Bleeding after menopause
- Difficulty getting pregnant or recurrent miscarriages
- Suspected fibroids, polyps, or uterine adhesions
- Unexplained pelvic pain or discomfort
It’s also sometimes used to evaluate abnormalities found on imaging, or to follow up after a biopsy.
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place. These are incredibly common concerns and a hysteroscopy can be a helpful step toward real answers (and real relief).
What to Expect During the Procedure
At Balance Medical, most hysteroscopies are performed right in our office. Even though these procedures are extremely well tolerated, we offer pain management options to add comfort and ease your mind. Here’s how a visit for hysteroscopy typically goes:
- You will arrive and complete consents.
- Pre-medication will be given.
- You’ll lie comfortably on an exam table, similar to a regular pelvic exam.
- A speculum is used to gently open the vaginal canal.
- The hysteroscope is inserted through the cervix into the uterus.
- Your provider will fill the uterus with a small amount of fluid to get a clearer view.
The procedure usually takes between 5 and 30 minutes. Some women describe mild cramping or pressure, but most find it very manageable. With the pain relief options we offer, our goal is to keep you as comfortable as possible throughout. We’ll walk you through every step so you feel informed and supported.
If you’re having an operative hysteroscopy (removing fibroids, polyps, etc.), your appointment may take a little longer. But rest assured, we’re ready for you…and you’ve got this!
Recovery and Aftercare
Good news: recovery from a hysteroscopy is typically quick. You may experience light spotting and mild cramping for a day or two. Think of it like the tail end of a period. Most patients return to normal activities within 24 hours.
We recommend taking it easy the day of the procedure. Drink water, listen to your body, and consider this your official excuse to cancel anything non-essential!
We’ll go over everything you need to know before and after the procedure, including what symptoms are normal and when to call us.
