If you’re exploring birth control options that are low-maintenance but still highly effective, an IUD (intrauterine device) may be worth considering. This small, T-shaped device sits inside the uterus and provides continuous pregnancy prevention for several years, without needing to think about it daily, weekly, or even monthly.
What Is an IUD?
An IUD is a small device placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It’s one of the most effective forms of birth control available and can last anywhere from 3 to 10 years, depending on the type.
There are two main types:
- Hormonal IUDs (like Mirena, Kyleena, Liletta, and Skyla): These release a small amount of progestin to prevent pregnancy and may also lighten or eliminate your period over time.
- Non-hormonal IUDs (like Paragard): Made of copper, this version prevents pregnancy without hormones and is great for those who prefer or need hormone-free options.
Who Is an IUD For?
IUDs are a great option for many women, including those who:
- Want long-term, low-maintenance birth control
- Prefer not to take a daily pill
- Are looking for hormone-free contraception (Paragard)
- Experience heavy periods or cramping (hormonal IUDs can help lighten flow)
- Are postpartum or not planning to have more children
We know every woman’s body and needs are different. That’s why we always start with a conversation, so we can help you make the most informed decision for you.
What to Expect During IUD Placement
If you decide an IUD is right for you, the placement is done during a quick in-office visit. The process typically takes just a few minutes, and while it may involve some cramping or discomfort, we’ll talk through pain management options and do everything we can to make the experience easier.
We often recommend scheduling placement during your period, when your cervix may be more naturally open, but that’s not a requirement. Afterward, it’s normal to experience some spotting and cramping for a few days.
You’ll be able to go home right away and resume most normal activities within a day.
Recovery Timeline
No downtime. No hassle. Just flawless results.
Recovery and Aftercare
Your body may take a few days to adjust after placement. Here’s what to expect:
-
- Mild cramping or spotting for a few days
-
- Possible irregular bleeding for the first few months (especially with hormonal IUDs)
-
- Avoiding tampons, menstrual cups, or sexual activity for about 24–48 hours (we’ll let you know what’s best for you)
We’ll also schedule a quick follow-up (usually within 4–6 weeks) to make sure your IUD is in place and everything feels right. And if something doesn’t feel right before then, we’re just a call away.
