What Is an Endometrial Biopsy?
An endometrial biopsy is a brief, in-office procedure that collects a small sample of the uterine lining (called the endometrium). That sample is then sent to the lab to be checked for abnormal cells, hormone-related changes, infections, or signs of cancer.
We often recommend this test for women who are experiencing:
- Heavy or prolonged periods
- Bleeding between cycles
- Postmenopausal bleeding
- Irregular cycles that don’t follow a pattern
- Infertility or multiple pregnancy losses
It’s also commonly done before procedures like endometrial ablation to make sure everything looks healthy first.
Why It Matters
The endometrium changes with your hormone cycles, thickening, shedding, and rebuilding each month. But, when bleeding becomes unpredictable or excessive (or when cycles feel “off”), it’s important to rule out possible causes.
An endometrial biopsy can help detect or rule out:
- Endometrial hyperplasia (abnormal thickening)
- Polyps or fibroids
- Hormonal imbalances
- Infection or inflammation
- Early signs of endometrial cancer
For many women, it brings clarity and reassurance… and when something more serious is going on, it helps us catch it early when it’s most treatable.

The procedure usually takes less than 10 minutes and is done right here in our office. It starts out like a routine pelvic exam:
- You’ll lie back while a speculum is used to view the cervix.
- A small (2 mm), flexible tube is inserted through the cervix into the uterus.
- Gentle aspiration is used to collect a tissue sample from the uterine lining.
You might feel some cramping, pinching, or pressure during the biopsy, but it’s very brief. We’ll guide you through it, explain what’s happening, and offer pain relief options if needed.
You’ll be able to drive yourself home and go about your day afterward. Some women notice light spotting or mild cramping for a day or so.
How to Prepare
There’s not much prep needed, but a few tips can help you feel more comfortable:
- Wear easy, comfy clothes
- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever (like ibuprofen) about 30 to 60 minutes before your visit
- Let us know if you’re anxious (we’re here to walk you through it)
- If you’re pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, or are being treated for an infection, let us know before your appointment so we can plan accordingly.
Is It Painful?
Let’s be real… this probably isn’t your favorite way to spend a morning. But, most women describe the sensation as strong period-like cramps that last just a few seconds…literally we count to 10 and its over! We’ll make sure you’re supported the whole way through.
And remember, it’s quick and it could give us important answers that make a big difference in your care.
When Will I Get Results?
Biopsy results typically come back in about 7 to 10 business days… we partner with NPL so we regularly cut that time in half! We’ll call you directly to explain the findings and talk through what comes next (whether that’s continued monitoring, a follow-up visit, or treatment options if something abnormal is found).
In many cases, results offer reassurance. But when something’s not right, we’ll help you take the next steps without pressure, panic, or confusion.
