What Is Hypertension?
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, occurs when the force of blood pushing against your artery walls stays too high for too long. Over time, this extra pressure can strain your heart and blood vessels, increasing the risk of serious conditions including heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems.
Blood pressure is measured using two numbers:
- Systolic pressure (top number): the pressure when your heart beats.
- Diastolic pressure (bottom number): the pressure when your heart rests between beats.
A normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg. Hypertension is generally diagnosed when readings consistently measure 130/80 mmHg or higher.
Why You Might Have Hypertension
Hypertension can develop for many reasons, often without obvious symptoms. Common contributing factors include:
- Family history of high blood pressure
- Being overweight or obese
- Lack of physical activity
- High salt intake
- Smoking or excessive alcohol use
- Stress
- Chronic conditions like diabetes or kidney disease
Because it’s often called the “silent killer,” many people don’t know they have hypertension until it causes complications. That’s why regular screenings are so important.
What to Expect at Balance Medical
At Balance Medical, your care starts with a thorough evaluation. Here’s what a typical visit for hypertension might include:
- Reviewing your medical history and lifestyle factors
- Measuring your blood pressure (multiple times to ensure accuracy)
- Ordering labs or other tests if needed to look at kidney function, cholesterol, or blood sugar
- Talking through your daily habits, diet, and stress levels
We will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan. This may involve lifestyle changes, stress management techniques, and medication. Our goal is to empower you with the tools and support you need to manage your blood pressure and protect your health.
