What Is Tubal Ligation?

Tubal ligation is a form of permanent birth control. It works by blocking or closing your fallopian tubes, so sperm can’t reach the egg. Once it’s done, you won’t be able to get pregnant naturally.

You might’ve heard it called “getting your tubes tied,” but these days we usually use clips or remove the tubes entirely. Most of the time, it’s done with a quick laparoscopic surgery using just a couple of small incisions.

Why Some Women Choose It

There’s no one reason that fits everyone. Some women are done having kids. Others never wanted them to begin with. For some, hormones from birth control just don’t work well. And for others, a future pregnancy could carry medical risk.

Whatever your reason, you don’t have to explain or defend it. If you’re sure, we’ll support you. If you’re still thinking about it, we’re happy to talk it through.

What to Expect

Here’s a simple breakdown of how the process usually goes:

Before Surgery
You’ll meet with your provider to review your health history, ask questions, and go through alternatives so you know exactly what this procedure means. We’ll talk through risks, benefits, recovery, and help you schedule when you’re ready.

The Procedure
Tubal ligation is typically done under general anesthesia. Through two small incisions, we use a tiny camera to access the fallopian tubes. Depending on the approach, the tubes may be clipped, cauterized, or removed.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most women go home the same day and recover within 3 to 7 days. Mild belly soreness or bloating is common for a couple of days. We’ll send you home with clear instructions so you know what to expect and when to reach out.

Can It Be Reversed?

Tubal ligation is meant to be permanent. Reversal surgeries exist, but they’re expensive, often not covered by insurance, and don’t always work. If you’re not totally sure yet, we can walk you through long-acting birth control options instead, like an IUD or implant.

It’s completely okay to take your time with this decision.
